What to do when your 2-Year-Old falls in LOVE
Before you panic or judge, I’m not talking about a boy. I watched my daughter fall in love with gymnastics before she turned two, and now we wanted to let her try dance at almost 2 1/2. Our trial class was nothing short of falling in love. The best part was that we bought $5 used tap shoes, which were slightly too small, and threw on a cute semi-dance-looking outfit she already had in her closet. So it wasn’t that she had gotten a pretty new leotard that made her fall in love.
She just fell in love with dance and everything about it– visiting the dance studio the first time; seeing all the other dancers big and small; walking into the room and hearing the click-clack of her tiny tap shoes on that wooden floor as she gazed across into the mirror. The pride and smile on her face said it all, her heart was full.
In the days after that first class, she talked about dance non-stop. “I do this with my feet” as she stomped around the room pretending to tap. “Ooh mom my dance school” as we drove passed the studio. “I like Ms. Suzette” as she talked about her teacher. “Going to tap class” as she shrieked with excitement over and over again. I imagine this is what it will be like when she talks about her first love when she’s older.
So, what do you do when your two-year-old falls in love with dance, or gymnastics, or anything else? You let it love them back! We went shopping together for her dance stuff– a new dance outfit/leotard, tights, and shoes. I took her to the real dance store for the first time. I have never seen her so excited about anything. It was so special for her! She left the dance store carrying her own pretty little pink bag with her tights and tap shoes. My heart melted as I saw the love in my little girl’s eyes.
Unfortunately, they grow up way too fast. One day she will have her first real love, but for now it’s dance and gymnastics. So, we celebrated this ‘first love’ and let her feel loved back.
Enjoy your ‘first love’ my tiny dancer. xoxo
